GLASS BY ARNIE GAUTSCH
Wheel engraving
Wheel engraving is about 400 years old and practiced only by a few people in Australia. It is still done in the very same way as at 1600. Only the foot pedal has been replaced by an electric motor, but the technique never has changed. After a rough sketch the design will be engraved with different diamond wheels (in earlier times with copper wheels) Dripping water cools the glass and prevents dust building from the cut out glass. Each peace is individually drawn, engraved and signed by the artist.
